Coronary artery stents and non-cardiac surgery

Summary:

The management of patients with coronary stents presenting for non-cardiac surgery is an increasing clinical problem. These patients, especially those with drug eluting stents, are at high risk of stent  thrombosis if antiplatelet therapy is ceased. Their management, including timing of surgery and antiplatet medications, needs careful discussion between the surgeons, anaesthetists and cardiologists.
