Perioperative
Epidural Analgesia and Outcome After Major Abdominal Surgery in
High-Risk Patients
This trial examined over 900 high risk patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. It compared IV opioids to epidural analgesia. The results showed no difference in the incidence of any major complications or death between the two groups except respiratory failure, with a clinically insignificant reduction in post operative duration of ventilation in the epidural group.
