Vasopressors in obstetrics: what should we be using?

Editors Note:

For decades ephedrine has been the preferred vasopressor in obstetric anaesthesia. This review shows phenylephrine to be a better choice. Metaraminol is the drug most frequently used in Australian practice and is similar to phenylephrine. (I found 6 or 9 mg of ephedrine IV often did not do much to correct hypotension following spinal anaesthesia for CS. Having replaced it with metaraminol 0.5 mg I find much faster and more effective restoration of blood pressure).
